Speeding wasn't an option tonight. While he had always found a way to talk himself out of a ticket, he had no stomach for dealing with the hassle of it all, especially since he would be under the influence of alcohol. Slower was better. That way, he could plan out the night in his mind, prepare for all possible scenarios, and ensure nothing was left to chance.
Jake smiled at his sinister thoughts. It's all about control.
The last decision Jake had to make, and arguably the most important, was choosing two things: the ideal whiskey to offer for the Montgomery's festivities, and the exemplary one to drink on the long ride into the mountains of New Jersey.
Fingering his assortment of bottles, he paused on a mid-priced Irish whiskey, which he chose for the family. It would more than do, as it was one of the best for their caliber of taste.
Then he settled on one of his favorites for the drive—a rare, peaty Scotch whiskey to relax him, while sharpening his mind at the same time. Jake was a strategic and creative thinker when he drank, and his internal editor, who told him not to do things, was dead asleep.
In truth, Jake wasn't worried at all about the upcoming evening. In fact, he had already predicted with certainty exactly how it would turn out. Jake was a decision maker by nature—driven and resolute. When he made his mind up about something, there was absolutely no turning back. In more ways than one, Jake had made up his mind about tonight. And no matter the course he took, the night was destined to end in his favor.
Jake grabbed his duffle bag, threw on his coat, and set the alarm on his penthouse.
After handing the doorman a cool hundred-dollar bill, Jake took the short walk around the block to where he had parked his newly purchased, in cash of course, used sedan. It was unassuming, exactly the way he needed it to be. He popped the trunk and threw in his leather duffle, which was filled with the perfect items for his Plan A: gifts, whiskey and overnight attire.
But before closing the lid, he paused to admire the other contents, the ones required for his Plan B. He smiled at the rope, handcuffs, drill, syringes, duct tape and, of course, the oversized locked box stocked with various firearms. He wasn't sure which weapons would be required and which ones would prove useless. Jake figured he was better off bringing all of them. It wasn’t as though he had practice in committing mass civilian homicide. But, if the night called for it, then he would gladly add it to his already stellar military resume.
Plan for the worst while forcing the best was Jake’s motto.
Sometimes the finest original plans weren't meant to be, and equally optimal alternatives must be explored. Taking on a family of five wasn't his first choice for the holiday, but he would do whatever needed to be done when it came to possessing Amelia.
If Amelia wasn't going to be with Jake willingly, he would have no choice but to force the situation until being with him was the only option she had.
If that didn't work, then, sadly, Amelia would belong to no one.
