About the Book:
Matchmaker Wilhelmina Montgomery helps cupid’s arrow find its mark in the drawing rooms of the Ton, effortlessly pairing even the most unlikely couples for a discreet fee. Perhaps not an appropriate pursuit for a lady…but with an ailing sister to care for, it’s Whimsy’s only hope at securing their future.
Meanwhile, penniless aristocrat Valerian St. David, Earl of Dashwood is society’s favourite matchbreaker; assisting those who want to escape engagement without being sued for breach of promise. Cynical, yes…but with no intention of falling in love himself, Valerian considers himself ideally suited to the role.
When Whimsy discovers that Valerian has set out to break the very engagement she has been painstakingly arranging, she refuses to allow this mysterious saboteur have his way. Yet she didn’t expect to find the handsome Earl so distractingly alluring. And suddenly, it seems that the Ton’s last two loneliest hearts are in danger of meeting their match… in the most inopportune of places.

Eve Hart's Romance Review:
I know I'm behind the times -- this book came out months ago, but I've been busy building a website, writing books, promoting authors, so I have a good excuse right?
Well, this book was a delightful surprise. I've read Anabelle Bryant's books before, but after the first two in The Regency Rogues series, the storytelling became...blah. The Midnight Rake fell flat for me, so I didn't know if I'd like Defying the Earl.
Fortunately for me, Anabelle did a great job creating a very interesting plot filled with twists and turns. I liked the characters individually, but... the storytelling itself, and the characters as a couple were tame. There wasn't as much heat as I'd like which means I skimmed a lot of the book. One of the biggest issues I had with this book was that in the end, Valerian has confessed his love to Whimsy BUT.... he won't marry her because he's poor, and he wants her to marry SOMEONE ELSE! Are you FREAKING KIDDING ME?! So, you LOVE her, but your pride is SO strong, you'd rather her be lost to you forever AND SCREWING ANOTHER MAN, because you don't have the money to buy her pretty dresses? You have GOT to be kidding me. Did he not KNOW Whimsy? Did he not KNOW she cared little for the material things? Obviously, these two weren't really written to be together.
Also, Jasper...my God, what can I say about Jasper...? Well, he is an IDIOT! Anabelle did a great job making me HATE him from the first few paragraphs. Nothing he did in the book redeemed him in my eyes, so I dunno if book two in the Regency Charms series will work for me - but I'm going to give it a try.
As cute as the story was MEANT to be, it just didn't come together for me. Sorry, Anabelle. Maybe the next one will be better?
I give this book a less than charming....
