I've always dreamed of being an artist. I would look at my sisters or brothers and envy their ability to paint, draw, or design websites or book covers. I would listen to the beautiful music made by my father and older brother and think, "I want to do that!" Years later, after realizing I have NO skill for the visual arts or limited musical talent, I found myself turning to the one form of art I could connect with: writing. As it no doubt was for many writers, the discovery of my penchant for painting word pictures changed my life. I simply cannot imagine life without writing.
Writing is a way for me to express the things I want and need to say. I may not be adept at verbal communication, but the thoughts and feelings simply flow from within me when I start writing. It's nearly impossible to STOP it from flowing once the tap has been opened. Writing gives me a freedom to express myself even when I feel spoken words will fail me.
Writing is also a way to connect with people. I may not be able to share my innermost thoughts and feelings effectively. I may have a hard time talking with people about my beliefs on society, politics, religion, science, magic, and humanity, but when I sit to write, all that changes. I can wax poetic or prosaic on my beliefs and thoughts, cushioning them in the guise of a work of fiction. When people read it, they stop to think about the truths I'm sharing—things that are truths to me, even if they've never given them a second thought. I can bare a piece of my soul in each word, sentence, paragraph, and scene I write. Anyone who identifies or connects with those words is essentially connecting with a piece of me. That is far more gratifying to me than sharing a beer or having a social conversation with a new acquaintance.
Writing is a form of creative expression that knows no boundaries. There are rules that help us to express ourselves with coherence and clarity, but when it comes to WHAT you want to say the sky is the limit. For me, I've found that I express myself best when I'm sitting and writing. The words leap out of my mind and heart and onto the page, to be put out into the world to find a home in your mind and heart. That forms a connection between us that is beyond spoken communication—it is a mutual understanding and appreciation of art!
Fantasy provides us with an escape, a way to forget about our mundane problems and step into worlds where anything is possible. It transcends age, gender, religion, race, or lifestyle--it is our way of believing what cannot be, delving into the unknowable, and discovering hidden truths about ourselves and our world in a brand new way. Fiction at its very best!
