Is there really a definable difference? The answer to that is yes and no. I think a lot of fantasy/ paranormal romances have elements of both in them. We live in a world where anything goes, so why do we have to categorise everything into neat little boxes?
But what if you like neat little boxes – and there’s nothing wrong with that - then let’s try to break it down into what each one means.
“the faculty or activity of imagining things, especially things that are impossible or improbable”
“of or relating to the claimed occurrence of an event or perception without scientific explanation”
Okay, that’s not really helping, we need to be more specific.
Wikipedia’s definition of Fantasy Romance:
Romantic fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy fiction, describing a fantasy story using many of the elements and conventions of the romance genre.
And Wikipedia’s definition of Paranormal Romance:
Paranormal romance is a subgenre of both romantic and speculative fiction. Paranormal romance focuses on romantic love and includes elements beyond the range of scientific explanation, blending together themes from the speculative fiction genres of fantasy, science fiction, and horror.
Confused yet? I am!!
When I began submitting my book, Touched, I labelled it as a paranormal romance, but when my publisher took it on, they called it a fantasy romance. So if I had to say what genre I write, what would it be?
I write romance first and foremost, that goes without saying, but the rest? Well, I’d have to say paranormal, urban fantasy and suspense, with a touch of chic lit thrown in for good measure!
Want my advice? When you read a book, don’t worry about the genre, just enjoy it!
Thanks for reading.
