Pleasure, guilty or otherwise, is the last thing on their minds when Gideon and Susanna are forced to team up to meet their individual goals. Gideon’s life in the rookeries has been one of few pleasures as basic survival takes up most of his time. A breath of fresh air, some quiet, and a good meal would be a luxury for him. Whereas Susanna’s pleasures are small and would normally be taken for granted in the world of the ton. After she meets Gideon, he introduces her to pleasures she never even dreamed of. I won’t reveal all the pleasures Gideon and Susanna share, but these are Susanna’s Top 5 Favorite Guilty Pleasures.
1) Watercolors and sketching.
Painting in her room is one of Susanna’s guilty pleasures—mostly because she escapes her dictatorial mother. She can spend hours with her watercolors and sketches. When Susana first meets Gideon, she is taken by his eyes and mulls over what color she would use to paint them.
But as she sat with the candlestick held aloft, the thief staring at her, all she could think was that he was beautiful. That she wanted to sketch him; that it would be impossible to find the right color for his eyes.
Reading is another guilty pleasure Susanna indulges in to escape the monotony of her days and her mother’s endless restrictions. Reading Shakespeare, and especially his sonnets, has made Susanna wish for a future that would hold passionate love and not only dry duty.
She wanted him to press her hard against that wall and kiss her until she was dizzy with the sort of desire she’d only read about in books smuggled into her room and hidden away from her mother. She’d blushed at several of Shakespeare’s sonnets, but she’d never blushed as fiercely as she did now.
3) A Pet
Susanna’s never been allowed to have a pet. Her mother would not have allowed animal hair on her fine silks and satins. So when she spots a scruffy mutt pursuing Gideon, she falls in love. And who doesn’t love a sweet doggie?
She’d always wanted a dog, but her mother had refused to allow her even that much companionship. Perhaps this was her chance to have the pet she’d always wanted.
4) Dreaming of having an adventure
When the reader is first introduced to Susanna in Earls Just Want to Have Fun, Marlow promises Susanna an adventure. That’s all the sheltered young woman wants, and in The Rogue You Know, she finally has her chance to visit Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens.
Perhaps she might ask her new sister to take her. Marlowe had promised Susanna an adventure as the forfeit for losing a wager. Susanna would have dearly loved an adventure. Her mother would never allow it, of course. Proper girls did not run away on adventures. Sometimes Susanna was so weary of acting properly.
5) Kissing Gideon
Susanna’s life has been such that every moment has been dictated and supervised by her overbearing mother. That’s until she meets Gideon. When the rogue realizes she’s never even been kissed, he decides to rectify the oversight immediately. Susanna doesn’t mind, although she knows she probably should!
She wanted him to kiss her again and touch her again and put his hands on her. She shouldn’t want that. Ladies didn’t have such wanton desires.
I love naps and cookies. What are your guilty pleasures? (comment using the form below!)
