Now, I know plenty of authors who create elaborate playlists for their books. But I usually write in peace and quiet while the kids are at school or asleep. With a six and four year old, silence feels like a gift. I love music, especially country, but I never write while listening to it.
Until this book.
There was something about Like a Wrecking Ball. While it played, I could see the sex scenes in my mind. So this time, I turned up the music and wrote. In fact, I wrote the entire story while listening to this song on repeat. (I think my dog could sing the words at this point.)
If you listen closely to the lyrics, you’ll hear the story of a touring musician. And you might wonder how the heck I wrote a book about a injured Army Ranger who has stayed far away from his hometown and the woman he loves while listening to Like a Wrecking Ball.
First, I loved the image of love & sex as a physical wrecking ball. And yes, my hero and heroine “knock some pictures off the wall” in their more intimate moments. But what really spoke to was the line “I’m coming home.”
For many of our service men (and women) that sounds simple, but it’s not. Dominic feels like a failure after his injury. The gunshot wounds have heeled, but his hand suffered permanent damage. And he never pictured coming home to Lily a broken man. She’s spent years caring for her alcoholic father and her terminally ill mother. He doesn’t want to be one more burden.
Of course when Lily is attacked, he pushes his fears aside and returns to Forever, Oregon. And yes, he almost breaks down the door to get to her, to help her fight her own demons. But staying—that’s not a given for him. He’s been gone a long time. He’s changed. And he’s afraid he’s out of second chances . . .
I hope you enjoy Stirring Attraction! And if you have a chance, listen to Like a Wrecking Ball.
