"Alan," she supplied.
He nodded. "Ms. Alan. Why are you here?"
Her eyes darkened. "Because there are things that go bump in the night, Mr. MacMillian. It's my job to bump back."
- A World Apart (Shades Below, #1)
Hello, and thanks so much for having me on your blog today!
My name is L.J.K. Oliva (Laura, to those who know me), and I write urban fantasy. I came to it a bit late; initially, I started my career writing romantic suspense. I still love a good love story, and the books I write currently still come with a heavy dose of romance.
These days, though, the flavor is a little different.
Urban fantasy is all about layers. All fiction is, but in the case of urban fantasy, the layers are sometimes more apparent to the naked eye. Looking back, many of my favorite books as a child could be classified as urban fantasy- the Redwall series and The Borrowers spring quickly to mind. I've always been fascinated with the idea of a whole other world that existed just outside the corner of my eye. Finally, I decided to take that idea and run with it.
Thus, my Shades Below series was born.
In urban fantasy, the world you see isn't the world you get...at the very least, it's only part of the story. This weaves some added dimension into your everyday romance novel. That happily-ever-suddenly becomes a bit less straightforward.
Just imagine: a mundane private detective develops feelings for a paranormal investigator, in the process having to face the paranormal for the first time. A witch falls in love with a former Catholic witch-hunter. A young woman is murdered, saved by a vampire who turns her into a monster.
Those are a few (admittedly shameless) examples from my Shades Below series. Shades Below consists of many worlds existing alongside of, and in some cases on top of, each other. I'm having a lot of fun figuring out how those worlds fit together and influence each other. But more than just that, it's pure joy walking alongside my characters as they navigate each world, while simultaneously navigating the feelings they have for each other.
I do love a good love story, after all.
"This is your world, Lena. I'm not a medium. I'm not a knight, or a Minister, or a monster-hunter. Clearly I don't understand shit about vampires." He sighed heavily. "So what does that leave? Where the hell am I supposed to stand?"
Lena searched until their eyes connected again. "With me."

L.J.K's Newest Release: The Devil's Disease
Psychic medium Lena Alan always sticks to what she knows, and what she knows are dead people. When her brother Cyrus agrees to look into a troubling incident for local vampire Seneca Lynch, Lena finds herself in unfamiliar territory.
One thing is clear: she needs a detective, and there's only one she trusts.
Private investigator Jesper MacMillian is ready to get back to business. Between his duties as leader of the city's Romani community and the stack of unfinished paperwork on his desk, he doesn't have time to think about ghosts, witches, or Lena Alan. After nearly a month of no contact, he's starting to think she's forgotten about him...until she waltzes through his office door and hands him a new case.
Still reeling from his last encounter with the subversive world, MacMillian is tempted to turn it down. But this is Lena, and he can't bring himself to tell her no. He soon finds himself drawn even deeper into the shadows, into a part of the demimonde where folklore is real and nightmares are born.
This time, there are more than just ghosts walking the streets of San Francisco.
There are monsters, too.
