I definitely need a sympathetic heroine, a scrumptious hero and a heartfelt, intriguing story to bring them together.
But I also want hints of the season in every chapter, treating the holidays like another character.
I want my readers to feel the warmth of woolen mittens. To smell the crisp winter air. To see my fictional Vermont town of Carol Falls lit up with twinkling lights. To hear the sound of snow crunching under boots. And the excited squeals of children looking forward to Santa’s visit.
A challenge…since I’m usually writing the story in the middle of July.
That’s right. I’m typing about snowmen and sleigh rides, while wearing shorts and sipping lemonade.
The fun comes because I get to celebrate the holidays then, too. In fact, I celebrate all year long.
How do I get in the mood to write about the cold, festive days of December? Even in the dog days of summer when the air conditioner is on full blast?
I have dozens of CDs filled with holiday music that I play. I love those songs—from up-tempo numbers like SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN, to the melodic HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS. It’s next to impossible to get stuck in the doldrums when listening to them. They’re so uplifting.
I also burn candles infused with the scents that remind me of the season—candied fruits, sugary Christmas cookies and cinnamon. Even apple- and maple-scented candles, which fit in perfectly with my Vermont setting.
And then there’s the snow. I love how it sparkles. Fortunately, I live in a little village in the Canadian Rockies, and there’s snow on the mountains for most of the year.
Oh, and let’s not forget movies. Don’t wait for cold weather to break out the classics IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE and WHITE CHRISTMAS. I enjoy those heartwarming stories any time of year.
Because it’s research. Which really works up a thirst, you know. One that only eggnog will quench.
Another fun perk of the job.
Look for her romantic comedy CRAZY FOR COWBOY, and her suspense titles, the award winning A STRANGER’S TOUCH, and the follow-up novella A STRANGER’S KISS, as well as the popular FROST FAMILY CHRISTMAS/FROST FAMILY & FRIENDS series, which combines the holidays, sweet romance and cozy mystery.
