To put it simply, writing is liberating for the mind and soul.
It’s also cathartic.
Let’s face it, we can’t always say what we really want to say to people when we’re angry, hurt or upset. I’m a crier. Mad. Sad. Happy. You name it, if the emotion is intense, I’ll weep. I find it hard to talk through tears and if I’m really upset, I’ll get flustered and won’t be able to string a sentence together. You totally know what I’m talking about, right? How about when you have a fight with someone and after it’s over—like an hour or a day later—you think of the best retort? But it’s useless because the person you’re ticked at is nowhere to be found and all you can do is tell your dog about the brilliant response. He, of course, doesn’t care about anything you have to say, unless it’s followed by a treat.
However, as writers, we can work through all that stuff via our characters. The funny thing is that I don’t usually do it on purpose. For me, it happens subconsciously. I’ll go back and read my work only to find a tidbit here or there which is clearly a direct result of a previous life experience.
Although, I will admit that I have modeled a villain or two after real live people I’ve had the misfortune to know. I won’t lie to you…it feels good to vilify someone in fiction. Some might call it petty vengeance but I call it cheap therapy.
