As writer’s, we’re taught that we should write what we love. You write what you would want to read and you’re supposed to be able to find your passion that way. When I first started writing again in 2013, the first book I began was a YA fantasy novel. Those were my absolute favorite then. The problem was, being in my early thirties and trying to write about high school put me at a disadvantage. I remember what high school was like for me, but I graduated more than ten years before. A lot has changed in that time.
All I can think to attribute the rise of this genre to personally is the aging up of readers who found a love of reading when books like Twilight took off. Regardless of whether someone was a Twilight fan or not, most likely, they read the books. For me, they were the books that brought me back to reading after an extended break. From a young age I was a reader but becoming an adult, I started drifting away from reading as more of my time was spent on text books in college and working multiple jobs to pay for said college. When I read Twilight, I was older than the intended target audience. I was in my twenties. I was used to reading Nicholas Sparks romance novels. It didn’t matter. The story and characters lured me into their world and renewed my passion for reading. I was a Girl Scout leader at the time and my troop was all eleven and twelve year olds. They were going crazy asking me where I was at in the story and getting excited for me to get to certain scenes.
Now, those girls are graduating high school. They were on the young end of the spectrum and I also read Twilight late in the game. The first movie was already out on DVD before I read any of the books. Most of the fans were in their late teens, putting them in their early twenties around the time of the NA boom. Coincidence? Perhaps. But, regardless, this genre has a readership made up of people of all ages and with the steam it’s gaining, I believe it will be around for a while.
Now that we got that out of the way, I’ll tell you what you need to know. I was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I went back to school in my late twenties and studied Stage Production Technology. I now work full-time in the alterations shop of a major department store and part-time backstage in the various theatres around the area.
I’ve been an avid reader from a very young age and the top goal on my list of things to accomplish in my life was to write and publish a book. During the summer of 2013, while working backstage on The Lion King, I read eleven books in four weeks. I read my first New Adult book and was introduced to a genre I felt I could totally relate to. The idea for Perfectly Broken and the character of Lili was born backstage during that time.
