When I was in college, I consistently received mid-range grades on my essays. When writing, I listed over every interesting fact and opinion that popped into my head. While this made for a longer essay, arguments and reasoning often became lost in a cloud of random statements.
When I arrived in law school, one of the first classes required was a writing class. Not my choice of a fun class, but it will forever be the best class I ever took. My first essay received a not so stellar grade because of my typical jumble of thoughts. The professor, however, took the time to tear down my poor organizational skills and forced me to rebuild my writing style until each word and each sentence mattered.
Her time and effort made all the difference. I earned a spot on the International Law Review the next summer based on a writing competition. After graduation, I went on to teach a Legal Research and Writing class at a local college.
When I began writing fiction, twenty years later, I used my legal skills to write cleaner scenes. This keeps my pacing tight and the focus of the action on the main drivers of the story. So in addition to learning the fundamentals of the law, I became a much better writer after enrolling in law school.
She does try to return now and then to visit family and eat long neck clams and lobster. Summers on Cape Cod are also high on the priority list.
Her experience in crime involves time as a court appointed attorney. Eventually, she switched fields to where bigger crimes take place, corporate tax. The allure of spending mornings in her pajamas homeschooling her children and writing fascinating fiction caused her to change careers again. Now that the kids are out of the house (in school), she writes romantic thrillers by day and is the perfect wife and mother at night.
Her experience in romance is limited to one man. Luckily, he’s still finding ways to charm her by taking her on vacations to the south of France, Fiji, and the Green Mountains when time is short. Avid travelers, they love to roam with their kids across continents in pursuit of skiing, scuba diving, and the perfect piece of chocolate.
She’s lived in London, Paris, Geneva, Washington D.C., and the accent destroying city of Cleveland. She currently resides near Philadelphia.
