Obviously, for various reasons, I didn’t wind up doing any of those things.
And I’ll be honest—I’m ecstatic.
Writing has opened doors and worlds to me which would never have existed if I’d gone the more ‘traditional’ route. I’ve been able to travel and meet people which I would never have met if I wasn’t a writer. I’ve made the most amazing friends through a connection which wouldn’t have existed if I’d decided to go to law school or med school.
Writing has also been much needed therapy. If I’m angry or sad or frustrated, it goes in to my work. I’ve worked out a number of issues—or at least partially worked them out—through writing. It kind of sucks for the characters but it’s great for me.
I’m not one to wax nostalgic but being a writer has definitely changed my life for the better. If anybody were to ask, I would tell them it’s always worth it to follow your dreams—to follow the yellow brick road. It might be scary and you might find a few flying monkeys along the way but it’s always worth it when you make it to Oz.
