The surroundings were gorgeous, with daily changes in water volume and color, and wildlife and beautiful scenery to match. After every spring snow melt or other high water event, the contours of the river would change. After one major flood, an island we loved to explore was moved to the other side of the river (a new water channel was cut through it!)
Life is like that river: just when you think things are flowing smoothly, the floodwaters rise. In all, we have hope. Although change is inevitable, the new “channels” cut in our lives are always full of promise.
I lean on my memories of that magical place and the small-town people I met there for many of my scenes and characters in the Sweet Land of Liberty Brides series. I enjoy writing about the travails of our ancestors who came from many different lands to build the homes, farmsteads and towns of our great country. What is magical about the place you live or have lived?
Here is a little more about the series:
Book 1 - Giovanna: The Cowboy’s Calabrese Mail Order Bride is about a young woman from Calabria, Italy. Her husband died soon after arriving in America, and she has few prospects until a friend convinces her to become a mail-order bride. Her daughter is sicker then she lets on to her intended husband, however. And she has another secret that is holding back her progress in the New World. Her husband, Laars, comes from a family of Norwegian immigrants. I love the interplay between the “hot” south and the “cool” north personalities these two must navigate to find true love.
Book 2 - Nathalie: The Circuit Rider’s Rhineland Mail Order Bride features a young girl born in Germany. She is of practical and hard-working stock – so of course her husband-to-be is just the opposite! Isadore is an intellectual dreamer – also hard-working – and his family has Jewish ancestry. These two must learn to depend on and love each other to find happiness.
Book 3 – Silvia: The Stockman’s Slovak Mail Order Bride is about Nathalie’s friend Silvia, from Slovakia. She has lived a hard life in New York since Nathalie left and her parents died. She abhors violence and fighting, but cannot seem to find others who will live in peace. Dell Casey is an Irishman, known as “Black Irish” for his deep black hair and blue eyes. He must marry to save the inheritance of his ranch … and he must fight for Silvia to do it.
I hope you’ll enjoy each book in the series. There are more characters calling out for their stories to be written! All will be from different countries learning to make their way in the American West.
Lorena raised four children in a modernized 1880s log cabin for 10 years. The seasons of nature, the beauty of mountains and rivers, and the simple enjoyment of gardening, reading and quilting have been her passions. She enjoys the interplay of cultures and passing down of traditions, recipes and family values to her children and grandchildren.
She lives with her husband, a retired Marine Corps colonel, and sons in Virginia. She collaborates on books with her daughter, whose passion for historical fiction exceeds her own, and is waiting for her granddaughters to fit into their mother's dress-up hoopskirts and bonnets.
