It’s been over ten years and quite a few books since I got the call, but it’s a moment I won’t soon forget. I was at my day job one afternoon when a nice lady from New York phoned and made that offer of my dreams. I’d won a writing contest, and part of the prize was the fast track past the slush pile and into the hands of an editor. My manuscript had changed desks a few times, but I was just what this particular person wanted for her list of authors. She loved my style, the concept of the story, and please send the next book, too . . .
Gulp! I suppose my reaction should have been jubilation, but my initial response was more like an urge to duck under my desk and hide. I honestly never expected anyone would buy my books and I was more than a little panicked by the sudden spotlight. But then again, this was a rite of passage, and I suppose a little fright was natural. I was moving out of my weekend-writer comfort zone.
It took some time before I relaxed and let my good fortune sink in, but once I did giddy dreams of fame and fortune danced in my head. Of course, the hard work of being an author had barely begun—but I was blissfully unaware of that part. And so what? It was only right I (eventually) savored the possibilities before my feet came back to earth.
Since then I’ve had plenty of conversations with editors, agents, and publicists and while it’s important to be professional, I’m no longer overwhelmed. At the same time, I treasure that first contact with the industry as a marker of both good fortune and how far I’ve travelled. When life calls, don’t hang up!
