My debut novel, The Courtship of Utopia Miner, is set in the Gold Rush of the Old West. To provide my readers with accuracy and depth in my story, I did my research – and BOY did I learn a lot.
Researching the time period of any book you write is absolutely necessary to the quality and readability of your book. I believe this whole-heartedly, which is why I take my time to do due diligence, even if it takes weeks of researching books and websites dedicated to the gold rush and all the horrors and triumphs that occurred between January 1848 and 1855.
On January 24, 1848, James W. Marshall discovered gold! When word got out, there was literally a RUSH of men and women striking out from cities and farmlands in the East to find their fortune along the rivers of Northern California. Sacramento River and the American River, which intersect in Sacramento California, were swarmed by gold panners – all desperate and eager to find that glimmering nugget in their well-worn gold pan or sifter.
Believe it or not, California isn’t the only state with gold – Colorado had its own gold rush in 1858 when William Russell discovered a claim near present-day Denver. The gold rush town in The Courtship of Utopia Miner is modeled after Pitkin Colorado, a town of gold miners and saloon girls!
To this day, there are museums dedicated to this rough and brilliant time in American history. Want to learn more? You can purchase any number of biographies, or you can just pick up a copy of The Courtship of Utopia Miner.

She has a deep love of the American gold rush era and often uses this as an excuse to do book research and travel to ghost towns in the western states.
Born into a city girl life, her parents raised her in St. Louis County. However, Linda has always felt her country girl roots calling her to move west young woman. She currently lives in rural Missouri with her hubby and the oldest of her three sons.
