Dare to Dream took me over two years to complete and a lot of scenes got rewritten, replaced, or deleted. I wanted to share a scene that didn’t make it into the book. Nathaniel owns a strip club in Santa Fe called The Den and once a month, Nellie, Nathaniel, and some of the staff at The Den get together for a poker game when the club closes for the night. This particular night Nathaniel decided bills and paperwork were a better option than losing all his money…
Life had a way of sneaking up on him and biting him in the ass. Considering Nathaniel was a panther, he really hated it when he wasn't the one doing the biting. Sitting at one of the tables in the back corner of his bar he tried hard to concentrate on the bills and invoices scattered in front of him. Considering he’d been starting at the same invoice for the last thirty minutes, he wasn't doing such a good job. He needed blinders and ear plugs, or maybe he should be in his office working instead of out in the middle of the bar where he could see everything, or in this case everyone.
For over a hundred years, Nathaniel had been in love with his best friend and like a fool no matter how many times he was turned down or patted on the head like some love sick ten year old boy, he still pined away for her. One would think he’d have learned his lesson by now, but no, he still held out for that one day Nellie would look at him and all the stars would align and she would beg him for forgiveness for being such an idiot for all these years. He had a better chance of Braxton, his head bouncer, strutting into work in a pair of stripper shoes and a boa deciding his life-long dream was to dance on one of the poles. Yup, that pretty much sealed it, he needed to seriously grow a pair of ball, suck it up, and go on with life. Problem was, there was no way he could go on with any kind of life without her in it. Best friend or lover, it didn't matter. Nellie was a part of him and had been since the moment she stumbled through the doors when he was just a cub.
He couldn't imagine having a life without her in it. Who would he harass on a daily basis and get what he got back tenfold? She had a sharper tongue on her then even he did, and that was saying something.
His lips curled into a smile when the female his mind had been on got up from the table she’d been sitting at with Braxton, Jamie, and one of the strippers, and started hooting and hollering, shaking that skinny ass of hers all over. Apparently she took the latest pot, but then again she always won at poker. Yet another reason he was sitting as far away as possible. He swore all she had to do was get close to a deck of cards and everyone's money just jumped into her pocket.
He shook his head, trying to get his concentration back on the job, but the smile didn't vanish from his face. It didn't matter if Nellie was never going to want him the way he wanted her, he had the most incredible woman in his life and that was more than most.
