Not so surprisingly, I find myself drawn to the same kind of stories when I write and read. The mix of larger purpose and deadly stakes is at once infinitely relatable and profoundly heroic. Though we may not all be saving the world from mind control ego-maniacs like Jessica Jones or crazed prison-planet convicts in Trapped, we all have family and friends for whom we would do anything. Luckily for us, most days that commitment only requires we tuck an extra snack into a kid’s lunch or provide a shoulder to cry on when a friend is upset. No broken limbs or lost soul required.
But that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t step up if needed, right? Or that we don’t spend each day making sure those we love are as safe and protected as we can make them. We’re all heroes in our own way—and we understand at some deep, primal level how much courage and energy it takes to get up each morning and continue the good fight. I think that’s part of why we fall so hard for our characters. They’re us, without the carpool issues and over-scheduled soccer games.
Two days later and life is returning to normal. My back is sore, but most of the snow has been shoveled to the side (thank you, my wonderful husband!). The kids are back to texting and hanging with their friends. My excuses for staying inside and staring at a screen have dwindled away. Which is good. Because I’m ready to get off the TV couch and…go sit at my desk. (Such an active life, I know.) But thanks to a little too much TV of the right kind, I’m reved up, inspired, and ready to see what my own characters will do next!
